So you’ve looked at the benefits of personal training and think you may be interested but want to know how it works?

Personal training at home is just that! Each session I would come to your home and we would work our way through a custom programme for you depending on your goals you are looking to achieve. Doing personal training at home is a very imaginative and interesting alternative to using a gym, you may find a warm up consists of walking up and down your stairs or a jog around the block, as well as using your own body weight for doing resistance and strength exercises rather than using big, heavy resistance machines in the gym that do most of the work for you!

Personal training at home can have many benefits, if you are scared or feel uneasy in a big gym environment, working out at home on a one-to-one basis will be perfect for you. Or maybe you’re very busy and just don’t have time to get yourself to a gym, do a workout and get back again and so some one coming to your house and doing a quick hour or half hour workout means you get exercise in without losing to much time in a day! Or maybe you have children, so again getting to a gym would be too much trouble. Or maybe you just don’t have the motivation yourself to get to a gym and do a workout. Whatever your reasons, personal training at home can help and can benefit you in many ways!

So how does PT at home work? As mentioned on the benefits page, there are three main sections – a consultation to assess your goals and previous experience and a fitness evaluation, a personalised exercise programme and supervised exercise. Below is more information about each of these areas: -

A consultation to assess your goals and previous experience and a fitness evaluation. The consultation will involve looking at what exercise you have done in the past and what you’re doing at the moment, as well as what you are trying to achieve and how much time you have to achieve this. It also involves discussing your health conditions and your medical history. The fitness evaluation is a series of tests - including cardiovascular, flexibility, muscle strength and endurance - to see what kind of shape you are in. This could be very simple tests or more complex depending on your exercise history and your current level of fitness.

A personalised exercise program. That is especially designed for you, depending on the outcome of your consultation and fitness evaluation. Your personalized exercise program will be continuously changing as you change and become fitter, more flexible and stronger.

Supervised exercise. You are given one-on-one attention throughout your session to make sure you are using proper form and technique and that you get the most from your workout programme with minimum risk of injury. A supervised session will also help you stick to your programme and give you motivation and encouragement throughout.

The consultation is the first time you’ll meet me as your personal trainer. This is best done at your home, as it gives me the chance to assess the area you will be working out in. i.e. how much room you have in your house, whether you could work out in your garden and any equipment you have. It will also give me the chance to get to know you and find out your goals, your previous experience and your medical history. And it will give you the chance to meet me, ask me any questions you may have and make sure you are happy to work with me in the future. Because this is the first time we will meet and it is important to know that there is good chemistry between a personal trainer and their client before you start working together, I offer the first consultation FREE. This first consultation will last between half hour and an hour. After this if we are both happy to continue we will book up the second session.

The second session will be your fitness evaluation. We will work through a series of test together to measure your cardiovascular strength, your muscle strength and endurance and your flexibility. We will also have work through other exercises to give me some sort of idea what you like doing and what you don’t and also what you are capable of before I start writing you a personalised programme. This session will be an hour long.

After the fitness evaluation session we will then decide the next time we want to meet and how often we want to meet and for how long. The majority of people have an hour’s session but you may just want a half hour. And most people will have once a week but you may want more often or less. Again, it’s up to you and this is something we will discuss together. I will also give you advice on what to do in between sessions, whether it’s following through the programme again on your own or trying to get out and do some walking, etc.

We will then meet regularly to work through your programme in a supervised session and your programme will get updated each time we meet up depending on how you are progressing.
