Sports massage therapy involves applying pressure, tension, motion or vibrations to the soft tissues of the body, which include muscles, connective tissues, tendons, ligaments, joints and lymphatic vessels, and by doing this we get a beneficial response.
Massage can be applied to the whole of the body or individual body parts depending on the treatment needed. Sports massage therapy looks into other contributory factors that maybe causing the problem, e.g. a muscle imbalance from a sport or an occupational factor , and looks at how these can be dealt with to stop the problem re-accruing.
Sports massage therapy also deals with stretching and strengthening muscles up to make sure opposing muscles are balanced and muscle systems are working together properly, as an imbalance in muscles can cause tension and tightness or in more extreme cases can lead to injury.
As part of a sports massage session, you will be assessed on tight and imbalanced muscles throughout and will be given advice at the end of the session as to how you can help yourself, either by stretching or strengthening muscles or by trying to change part of your lifestyle.
